Cracked teeth are fairly common, and although they can cause immense pain, they can take some time to be diagnosed and treated. The reason for this is because there are several different types of cracked teeth, and if the crack is too small to see, if can go unnoticed for some time. At our practice, however, our endodontist is practiced in locating and treating cracked teeth, so we can help provide the necessary treatment at the earliest stages. Some of the most common symptoms of a cracked tooth include:
- Inexplicable pain that occurs while you are eating
- Sensitivity in the teeth
- Pain in the teeth that does not have a definite source
- Difficulty pinpointing the location of the pain
Cracked teeth can range anywhere from tiny cracks that cannot even be identified on an X-ray to ones that reach all the way down your tooth’s roots. The severity of your crack will determine the treatment you receive. Cracks that are just on the biting surface or crown of the tooth may require only a filling or bonding; others may require a dental crown. Cracks that are in your tooth’s roots, however, are most often treated with a root canal or, in extreme cases, with an extraction.
