You know that a toothbrush is an integral part of your dental hygiene routine. However, there are many facts about the toothbrush that you are probably not aware of. Continue reading to learn some fun facts!

How old is the toothbrush?
The toothbrush has existed, in various forms, for 5,000 years. In ancient times, a chew stick was used to remove food from teeth. This thin twig had a frayed end. The toothbrush slowly evolved from there to the toothbrush we know and love today.

Where was the first mass-produced toothbrush invented?
The first mass-produce toothbrush was invented in a prison. William Addis was jailed in 1770. He saved a bone from dinner and received bristles from a guard. He made tiny holes in the bone, inserted the bristles and sealed them with glue. Addis used this to brush his teeth. When Addis was removed from prison, he modified his prototype and started a company to manufacture his toothbrush.

Is it better to brush or floss first?
It doesn’t matter as long as you brush and floss every day.

How should a toothbrush be cleaned and stored?
Remove toothpaste and debris by rinsing your toothbrush in tap water. Then store your toothbrush in an upright position where it can air dry. Only store a toothbrush in a closed container when you must, as a closed container is more conducive to the growth of bacteria.

How long should each tooth brushing session last?
Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. If you have a hard time brushing for long enough, try setting a timer.
